Piercing, brilliant eyes – Kannama,
Are they sun or moon?
Round black eyes – Kannama,
Are they the blackness of the sky?
Like the black-blue saree of silk,
Studded with diamonds;
Are the stars that manifest,
In the middle of the night!

Garden flower’s splendor - 
Is that your splendid smile?
The blue waves of the sea – 
Are the waves in your heart!1
Graceful cuckoo’s song – 
The sweetness of your voice!
Tender maiden – Kannamma,
Embracing love, I feel.

Talking astrologer’s almanac2 – Kannamma,
Of what need is that?
For those impassioned – Kannamma,
What use is the almanac?
With the assent of the elders – the bridal 
Ceremonies, we shall do later;
Could I wait any longer? – look here,
A kiss on the cheek!

1 “The blue waves …your heart!” is a reference to the visual beauty of the waves forming and crashing on the shore. Just as he relishes the cresting and ebbing of waves, he relishes the many moods and thoughts that crests and ebbs within her heart.

2 The word in the original poem is ‘Saathiram’, which means any branch of documented knowledge from religion to science to math to arts. In this poem, the word Saathiram is used in the specific context of wedding ceremony, for which the closest English translation I could come up with is, ‘Astrologer’s almanac’.
This is because, such a branch of knowledge is exclusive to the Hindu culture. Every Hindu consults an astrologer for all events big and small in their lives, such as birth, marriage, buying a house, foretelling good or bad events etc. The astrologer creates a specific chart according to each requirement. He derives this chart from an almanac that exists specifically for this purpose called “Panjangam” in Tamil, which is the implied branch of knowledge in this context. Since there is no equivalency for such a concept in the non-Hindu, English speaking world, this is the closest translation.

1. சுட்டும்விழிச் சுடர்தான்-கண்ணம்மா!
   சூரிய சந்திரரோ?
   வட்டக் கரியவிழி-கண்ணம்மா!
   வானக் கருமைகொல்லோ?
   பட்டுக் கருநீலப்-புடவை 
   பதித்த நல்வயிரம் 
   நட்ட நடுநிசியில்-தெரியும் 
   நக்ஷத்தி ரங்களடீ!

2. சோலைமல ரொளியோ-உனது 
   சுந்தரப் புன்னகைதான்?
   நீலக்கட லலையே-உனது 
   நெஞ்சி லலைகளடீ!
   கோலக்குயி லோசை-உனது 
   குரலி னிமையடீ!
   வாலைக் குமரியடீ-கண்ணம்மா!
   மருவக் காதல்கொண்டேன்.

3. சாத்திரம் பேசுகிறாய்-கண்ணம்மா!
    சாத்திர மேதுக்கடீ?
    ஆத்திரங் கொண்டவர்க்கே-கண்ணம்மா!
    சத்திர முண்டோடீ?
    மூத்தவர் சம்மதியில்-வதுவை 
    முறைகள் பின்புசெய்வோம்;
    காத்திருப் பேனோடீ?-இது பார்,
    கன்னத்து முத்தமொன்று!
